Novec 1230 Gas Fire Suppression Systems

Concept Fire Suppression Ltd’s Novec 1230 Clean Chemical Fire Suppression Agent is now the alternative to FM200 and FE227 due to it’s better environmental credentials than other clean chemical agents and now price.

Manufactured by 3M, Novec 1230 fluid is the most recent addition to the industries product range and is specified by many end users, consultants and insurers as the clean chemical agent of choice.

The Agent

Novec 1230 is stored in cylinders as a liqud and super pressurised to either 24 bar or 42 bar using nitrogen. It has a boiling point of 40 deg C, leaves no residue and is nonconductive.

The nozzle will vaporise it from a liquid to a gas so that it is spread throughout the room. It is designed to be used on Class A fires (electrical, wood, paper and fabric) and Class B fires (flammable liquid fires).

Novec 1230 has an Ozone Depletion Potential of 0 and a Global Warming Potential of 1 equal to that of CO2 and has an Atmospheric Lifespan of just 5 days or less. Although not as environmentally friendly as inert gases Novec 1230 is the best of the clean chemical agents so does offer a good alternative where a client’s policy dictates a greener solution.

Hardware

Manifolded Novec 1230 CylindersConcept Fire Suppression Ltd use Hygood Sapphire, Fike or Kidde hardware and cylinders are available in several different sizes from as small as 8L through to 180L. Multiple cylinder systems can either be connected together using a manifold (Manifolded Sytem) or separately distributed throughout the room (Distributed Cylinder System). Pipework is standard schedule 40 and usually arranged as a Distributed Cylinder System with a standpipe arrangement. This cuts down on the pipework required in comparison to a manifold system.

Nozzles are available in 1/2″, 3/4″ 1″, 1 1/4″, 1 1/2″ and 2″ and can be 360 or 180 degree. 360 degree nozzles are located in the centre of the room and 180 degree nozzles are located adjacent to the wall.

On multiple cylinder systems the master valve is actuated from the detection system control panel. The other cylinders are actuated through a network of small bore tubing to a pneumatic actuator to ensure the required amount of gas is discharged into the room.

Novec 1230 is stored as a liquid so it requires less cylinders than inert gas and therefore requires less storage space. On a room volume of 750m3 Novec would require just 4 cylinders where as inert gas would require 17 cylinders.

Room Integrity Testing

A Room Integrity Test will ensure that the room will contain the Novec 1230 gas for as long as possible (BS EN 15004 stipulates a minimum of 10 minutes). Before this test is carried out all the entry points for cables and pipes in the walls, floor and ceiling must be sealed.  . The sealing is done using fire proof materials to ensure no gas will escape during the discharge and the concentration level will be held for 10 minutes to suppress the fire.
